THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT GENRE

Please familiarise yourself with the kind of work we like. Does your writing support our vision (see About Us)? Local Legend publishes fiction and non-fiction, biography and poetry. Moreover, our themes range from the paranormal to mystery and psychology, from angels to the natural world and everything inbetween. In these ways, our books encourage readers on their Mind, Body and Spirit journeys through life. Essentially, they support wellbeing. They help us to understand what it really means to be human. And they help us grow closer to the natural world.

HOW TO SUBMIT A BOOK

In general, you should submit a brief synopsis of your work, say, two hundred words, by email. Together with this we’d like the opening chapters (up to, say, ten thousand words) and a little about yourself so we can get to know you.

  • These documents need to be MS Word attachments to your email, double-spaced and without headers/footers.

Then we shall respond with a review and suggestions for how you may continue. Please do also read the Feedback offered to Local Legend by other authors and by our design partners.

SPIRITUAL WRITING COMPETITIONS

Every two years Local Legend holds a national Spiritual Writing Competition. These are open to everyone, with a First Prize of free paperback book publication worldwide. That’s right, no costs at all. Runners-up are also offered publishing contracts. The results will be published in the MBS Press and professionally marketed throughout social media. So please note HOW TO SUBMIT A BOOK, above.

Please see our Home Page for the results of our 2026 competition.

GENERAL TERMS

  • Local Legend wants to keep your costs down. That’s why we only publish paperback MBS books, on white paper, with a limited number of illustrations. However, printing and binding is of the highest quality. Our covers are professionally designed in full colour. Moreover, we have a national reputation for the quality of our editing.
  • Your book can also be published digitally and will be available on all eBook platforms.
  • Local Legend books are published in the UK, North and South America, Europe, India, the Far East and Australia. Like most paperback books now, they are Printed on Demand (PoD). This means that they are available worldwide, through any bookstore on the High Street or online.
  • We want to see completed manuscripts, preferably fully edited, in MS Word and submitted electronically. Therefore, please note HOW TO SUBMIT A BOOK above.
  • We do not offer any financial advance on royalties, but these are paid in full half-yearly. Happily, your royalties will typically be about three times higher than most publishers offer.
  • When we accept your MBS book, a one-off very low Publishing Fee is payable. Yet this is a fraction of what most other independent companies charge. It just covers the actual publication and our running costs because Local Legend is not-for-profit. Full details will be given at that time but it includes basic editing, text formatting, cover design and all administration.
  • There are no further costs, except a small annual Market Distribution Fee charged by the printers. Occasionally, the British Library will request extra copies of your book for the UK national libraries. However, this is an honour so you will be asked to contribute to the cost of these.
  • You may order copies of your book yourself direct through Local Legend. The advantage of this is that it cuts out distribution costs so you pay less than half retail price.
  • Most book publishers nowadays do very little marketing of an author’s work. Yes, we agree that this is partly your responsibility and we offer detailed professional advice. However, Local Legend definitely shares in this effort, publicising your book widely across social media and in the MBS Press.
  • Several high-profile MBS bookstores stock Local Legend titles. Furthermore, some of our books are entered in national competitions and we have won many prizes.
